WordPress developer, ..
(( search box )) located here.

WPBeginer, gotta say here: that this website has some really cool stuff on it, and it ain’t just for beginners neither, but it does has a Noob approach to searching for stuff. It also has a very heavy emphasis on the over-use of paid Plugins in my opinion.

StackOverFlow, not a Noob in sight: except for some of the unresearched questions being asked, here be the questionable search box in, ..
(( question ))

The Mozilla support site is a right royal bitch to navigate, but it does have some real neat stuff on it to peruse. Downside, you do really need to know what you want to find — before even looking for it. The place is not Noob friendly at all, that said, it’s got shed loads of brilliant examples.

But above all, there’s the king ‘n’ queen of all searches, ..
Google itself.

** Remember, this stuff discussed here can kill your website stone dead, so only proceed with a current backup under your belt.

This page title is, ..

[ Howtoo: making a WordPress Backup ]

HEADER WARING.

Oh’ my God, (just look at that!) — But at least I’ve got your attention.
Anyhow – You can really cause a major faux-pas (pronounced as foe-par), to your cherished web presents in playing with this sort of dirty backend shit, (and not the nice giving type of pass-through present either), so make funking well sure that you have a backup of your WordPress site, **before** you bloomin’ well start.

This really looks horrid, .. don’t it.

I actually get a bit pissy when I see these sensible obstructions (in the way) of getting to the good stuff, but it’s also a must have for all you manic-kamikazes out there, who just want to dive straight in: don’t, step back — and then backup!

** And don’t for funks sake think for one minute that your webhosts backup will cover you if it all goes tits up, it don’t: it isn’t, and it physically can’t.

Believe me, I’ve been there: the backup provided to me by my old hosting provider was as corrupted as my site was with zero length files.

The technical screw up was all due to having no web-space being allocated to my account, as an operator error, then an automatic WordPress update took it all out, but the cache didn’t change until I logged in two weeks later, but by then my old working backups had been overwritten with zero length files.

The above is just one way that your Hosting Providers backups don’t work: you really do need a physical zip file backup, that’s then located as far away from your own machine, and also your providers servers as is possible.

Here’s my WordPress backup plugin recommendation that’s called WPvivid.

Now, .. I’m certainly not saying that this free set of loosely connected PHP scripts are the best, they’re not: not by a long shot, but at least they do seem to work on most websites, and on most of the Hosting Providers found out there. An awful lot of backup Plugins don’t work, with the reasons of failure mainly due to file ownership issues, resulting in the dreaded, ..

** (HTTP) 500 Internal Server Error response code. It actually indicates that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request, couldn’t decided on what it was: so threw that out as a standard catch-all-error.

Usage: after a simple WordPress install through your backend panel, (or a quick zip file download), then the program’s basic running mode, and operation is very good: after that it’s a straight forward series of click click clicks, and then a final click, (and the backup) is finished.

All-in-all, it takes about five minutes.

Well, (almost), be aware that the basic backup lite version, — only gives you one location to save your sites backup zip files in: with one being their very own heavily prompted offsite location, and also one being your (WordPress Installation) folder itself.

Not good on several fronts, ..

Firstly, it will add to your overall web storage, and that’s all chargeable: with the charges going through the roof in duplicating your website ad-nauseam.

Secondly, it’ll cripple you financially and mentally if you ever misplace your site.

So, — during your simply click click clickety clicking in your sensible stepping back from the abyss, then at least setup WPvivid to save the resulting zip file(s) to an offline location, that simply requires your username and password in the third tab of the Backup Plugin, ..

Note: the username and password is saved in your own database, (so it’s safe), but for the backups themselves, .. you can use:-

GoogleDrive or DropBox or Sync.

They’re all offsite file storage service providers, and they are all free to use, (up to your max allowance.)

** I’m not including that total screw-up called OneDrive here: because it simply ain’t worth it with it’s constant cross indexed file issues, that it does all the time in the background; got two or more (pictures) and (document) and or (video) folders? That’s all due to OneDrive struggling to index files across two networked machines, both working in the same private network, and not on a domain.

But to challenge the stuck up jerks over it, then their snobbish responses is that they are perfect, and it’s an issue that’s out of their control, (piffle!) That well know established problem doesn’t happen with any of the other providers. So, my advice is to use that piece of Mickysoft software mess at your peril, and I’ll also advise you to never rely on it for any of your important stuff.

OK, then, .. with that sense of decorum frugally established where the mouse is concerned, we will now impassionedly review the rest.

DropBox, you are a bunch of funking old tight-arsed has-beens’, who are still restricting your offline storage to a paltry two gig allowance, and to add insult to injury; the dick-wads in charge, have now reduced the install accounts to only three machines, that said: it works well and is very easy to setup and use.

GoogleDrive is OK with its offering of ten meg use, but it is under the purview of the CIA, so be very funking careful of what you put in these directories. Downside: not so easy to use and set up, but a good offering. Update: as of Jun 2021, all old abandoned repositories will be deleted, and the once free photo allowance, will now be included in the allocated 15GB storage space.

Sync is Canadian owned, and as such; they can’t be got at by the CIA. You also get 5 gig of free storage space, (no strings), which ain’t half bad. No downsides: they are quite good to setup and use.

Out of all of them, Sync are the best provider, and just like Drobox and Google-Drive mentioned before, setting up your online account is simplicity itself.

SO! — Even with (all) of their limited offerings and weird restrictions, you really haven’t got an excuse for not backing up your WP installation off-site.

Note, .. Once Done, .. it can be done again and again, and this time at your leisure, and all via the one click invitation to (backup), that’s conveniently sat on the Admin Bar: it really is simplicity itself to press, that even this writing-simpleton has got to grips with.

Note to self: To do — shows the zip file breakdown of the actual (backup-structure) on your local drive.
